Craven County Wood Energy Limited Partnership (CCWE) owns and operates a biomass fueled power generating facility near New Bern, NC, utilizing a conventional combustion boiler and steam turbine process.  The nominal capacity is 50 megawatts.  CCWE has been a dependable source of sustainable energy since commercial operation began, averaging 95% availability over the life of the project.  CCWE was originally developed to serve a 45 megawatt contract for firm capacity and energy to Progress Energy Carolinas under a 15 year contract that began on January 1, 1991 and expired on December 31, 2005.  In 2004, CCWE, LP set in motion a redevelopment initiative that culminated in transitioning CCWE from a Progress Energy Carolina’s resource to a PJM Interconnect resource.  CCWE began delivering 47 megawatts of clean sustainable, renewable energy on a non-recallable basis into the PJM market through a commercial market node in 2006.

CCWE produces clean sustainable, renewable energy by utilizing the clean waste materials such as bark, mill residuals, and other waste wood, such as tree trimmings, recycled pallets, clean wood from landfills, wood shavings recovered from local brooder house poultry growing operations, wood chips and residue that are a byproducts of logging operations and waste railroad ties.  The facility uses no fossil fuels with the exception of small amounts of propane for startup purposes only.

Craven County Wood Energy operates under and complies with a Title V air quality permit, No. 06419T16 and a NPDES permit, No. NC0075281.

Farmers in eastern North Carolina counties utilize fly ash produced at the facility as a liming agent.  This program was developed in cooperation with the NC State Cooperative Extension Service and the NCDENR Division of Solid Waste Management.  Bottom ash is used as roadbed material for farm and logging roads.

Craven County Wood Energy enjoys an excellent relationship with the local community.  CCWE provides many opportunities for local schools to tour the facility and learn about renewable energy.  The management of CCWE has been instrumental in developing the NC GreenPower program.  In fact, CCWE has received several awards from the state of North Carolina:
  • Special Recognition (Case Study) North Carolina Governor's Award for Excellence in Waste Reduction in 1994
  • Certificate of Merit for Pollution Prevention North Carolina Governor's Award for Excellence in Waste Reduction in 1997
  • North Carolina Department of Labor Certificate of Safety Achievement in 2000 and 2002

CCWE is a member of the New Bern Chamber of Commerce and supports a number of local community service organizations including the Craven Regional Medical Foundation, the Local American Red Cross Chapter, the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, CETC (Craven Evaluation/Training Center), the Howell Center and CMS Power Players, a local T-ball team. Craven County Wood Energy Limited Partnership is owned by affiliates of two companies: CMS Energy Corporation of Jackson, Michigan, and Decker Energy International, Inc. of Winter Park, Florida.  The affiliates own both general partner and limited partner interests.
